Living Set Apart

I believe both Romans 12 and Colossians 3, are great passages to read and meditate on for someone who has just given their life to Christ. It is also a reminder for believers to know that they are set apart. Each passage teaches you not only how to honor God but to honor yourself. It teaches you how to always stay humble, and also about one of the greatest commandments, Love. The gist of each passage, shows you how to live set apart; you have been made new, abnormal, uniquely and wonderfully made.

*Romans 12:1-3, teaches us to offer ourselves to God daily. To let our flesh die and pick up our cross and follow Him instead of our own selfish desires. He wants us to know that we are designed to stand out, and to never conform to this world. As our relationship with God grows stronger and we study His word, we become wiser. The behaviors and customs of this world should no longer be a desire, because of the transformation. You will know this because you will face conviction and guilt when you still want to take part in the things of this world.

*Romans 12:3-7, teaches humility. Your confidence comes from God, and that is very important but It is so important for us to remind ourselves that we are not better than anyone else. All sins are equal. As believers we all make up the body of Christ. We are one body but with different functions, and these are our many gifts, that we must use to build His church.

*Romans 12:9-21, teaches us about love! God is love, we were called to show the love of God. This might be hard at times, but we must sincerely love all God's people, even those who fight against us. We have to pray daily for the heart of Jesus, to love His people.

Colossians 3 is similar but it goes into depth of some of the things we have to let go of, and to clothe ourselves with certain characteristics because we have been made new. Now that we have been made alive in Christ we are to focus on heavenly things instead of earthly things. Set our hearts in eternity and not temporarily earthly desires. We are to "look at our life from God's perspective and to seek what He desires" (NIV study Bible notes).

(VV.5,8) We are to put to death: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed(idolatry)... and get rid of anger, rage, malice, slander and filthy language from our mouth.
(V.12) We are to clothes ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Colossians 3 also gives us instructions for our household. How wives should be submissive, Husbands should love their wives, children to obey their parents, and how parents should not belittle their children.

I highly recommend that you read and meditate on these passages, and refer back to it when needed!
